Gathering Under the Lights (2026) Original Oil Painting by Paul Cheng

I wanted to capture the warmth of people gathering at a city restaurant in the evening. Illuminated architecture, dining tables, figures, and the surrounding darkness come together in a lively rhythm. Rather than describing each person in detail, I used spontaneous, simplified brushwork and vibrant touches of color to explore the relationship between people, light, and the night, turning an ordinary urban evening into a moment filled with warmth and story.

I built the nighttime atmosphere with deep browns, greens, and blacks, then introduced lively strokes of white, pale blue, red, and yellow to suggest lights and figures. Varied paint textures and visible brush marks allow architecture, people, and reflections to move naturally between representation and abstraction, giving the painting energy and rhythm.
