Frost & Flame began as a face-off: three dark strokes standing like fir branches, and on one of them, a first Christmas light. The start of decorating a living tree outdoors, maybe - stalled by the cold, or by running out of time, or by not having the right string of lights yet. Acrylic on canvas, no drawing first, no retouching after.

The inspiration came from winter itself; its rhythms, its patience, the way it makes everyone wait. And from nature, and from time passing whether you're ready or not. The pale blue-green ground splits the canvas the way frost splits a morning: sky and earth, sometimes nearly the same colour in winter, hard to tell where one stops and the other starts.

I hope viewers feel the whole range Christmas carries before the day itself arrives - the preparation, the waiting, the small joys along the way, one string of lights at a time.
