Her spirit is out chasing a moon it will never catch. That was never the point of setting it free.
From The Middle is an original acrylic painting on board, 40 x 30cm, part of my ongoing series The Middle Country. It began the way these paintings always do, with a loose, accidental ground, half accident and half intention, made somewhere in the middle where the paint and I meet. Out of that ground came a vivid red and orange landscape, cockatoos gathered in golden trees, a figure seated beside an open cage, and a small red bird streaking away toward a pale moon in the sky.
I paint the things that mean something to me: my family, held in the figures and the birds who move through this glowing, imagined landscape. This one is about the particular kind of freedom that isn't about arriving anywhere, only about the flight itself.
Painted with artist quality acrylics on MDF board. Ready to hang. Certificate of authenticity included. Ships worldwide direct from my studio in Brisbane, Australia.
