There is a moment when you watch your children move ahead of you, forward into a life that is theirs to walk now. The breath it takes away is half pride, half letting go.
On Their Way is an original acrylic painting on board, 45 x 50cm, part of my ongoing series The Middle Country. It began the way these paintings always do, with a loose, accidental ground, half accident and half intention, made somewhere in the middle where the paint and I meet. Out of that ground came a rolling green landscape, cockatoos gathered in golden trees, two figures riding bicycles along the ridge, and one figure standing further off, watching them go.
I paint the things that mean something to me: my family, held in the figures and the birds who move through this glowing, imagined landscape. This one is about the particular ache of watching someone you love move forward on their own path, equal parts pride and letting go.
Painted with artist quality acrylics on MDF board. Ready to hang. Certificate of authenticity included. Ships worldwide direct from my studio in Brisbane, Australia.
