This painting was created en plein air at Rocabruno Pass in the Pyrenees, near the border between Spain and France. A mountain road leads through sunlit green slopes towards the distant horizon, where the ruins of a 14th–15th century fortress can be seen.
Painting directly on location, I wanted to capture the intense summer light, rich mountain colours and sense of open space. Expressive brushwork and vibrant colour contrasts preserve the immediacy and atmosphere of the moment.
