Flow State II (2026) Photograph by Steven Irwin

Flow State II is a layered photomontage and mixed-media photographic work exploring movement, repetition and collective behaviour. Blurred figures merge into a continuous human flow, while the escalator becomes a metaphor for routine and automatic movement. Scratched marks, technical data, grids and fragments of handwritten text are layered into the photograph, creating tension between the physical crowd and an unseen system of instruction, measurement and control. “FOLLOW” and “KEEP PACE” suggest how easily individual movement can become collective conformity.
