First Snow (2012) Original Oil Painting by Alexander Levich

Alexander Levich’s First Snow captures a moment of almost losing orientation while travelling through heavy snowfall. The view is from inside a moving car: a tree trunk, a light and indistinct shadows remain visible beyond the window, but their relationship becomes difficult to judge.

Turquoise colour unifies the scene, crossed by sweeping white strokes and softly blurred flakes. A few green leaves retain their shape at the left, offering a close point of focus against the dissolving distance. The painting conveys both the freshness of first snow and the uncertainty of seeing through it.

The work was shown in Levich’s thematic solo exhibition Weekend. Its concept grew from a true romantic story of sudden November snow creating the feeling that the outside world had disappeared around two loved ones. Here, that intimacy is suggested through a shared view from within the car.
