Original artwork description
First Crocuses is an original watercolour painting inspired by the first signs of spring. A small group of deep purple crocuses stands in a simple glass bowl, with their green stems and leaves reaching upwards and their reflections visible through the clear water.
I was drawn to the contrast between the rich violet petals and the delicate transparency of the glass. The water, reflections and overlapping stems add another layer of detail to the simple arrangement, while the soft shadow beneath the bowl gives the composition a sense of depth.
Painted during my early creative period, this work reflects my interest in observing everyday natural subjects and exploring how light, transparency and colour can be captured in watercolour. The expressive linework and carefully layered colour are characteristic of my earlier approach to painting.
