Fading into memory (2026) Original Oil Painting by Nimasha Perera

20.32 x 25.4 x 0.3cm (unframed) / 20.32 x 25.4cm (actual image size)

£204.21

This work emerges from an exploration of how the mind holds and loses the faces of those we once knew. The portrait, rendered in warm earth tones of ochre, sienna, and deep umber, dissolves at its edges as though being reclaimed by time itself.

The blurred, sfumato-like technique was chosen deliberately to mirror the unreliable nature of memory, the way a face we once knew intimately can gradually lose its sharpness, leaving behind only an impression, a feeling, a ghost of familiarity. The canvas texture is intentionally visible throughout, adding a raw, tactile quality that grounds the ethereal subject in physical reality.

Painted in oils on canvas, the work invites the viewer to sit with discomfort, to confront the unsettling space between recognition and forgetting. Who is this person? Do you know them, or are you only beginning to forget them?
