ETERE (2025) Original Mixed-media Painting by Johna Gussoni

75 x 155 x 4cm (framed)

£3,879

Etere explores the threshold between presence and absence, between physical matter and the immaterial realm.
The work consists of around 4,500 tobacco sticks, waste material diverted from its ordinary fate and reimagined within a new visual form. As in a fragmented pattern, the elements gradually shift from orange to blue, creating a chromatic vibration that seems suspended between the physical and the atmospheric.
The title refers to the fifth element, the ether: that which, in tradition, does not fully belong to tangible matter, but passes through it, connects it, and makes it perceptible. In this sense, the work operates on two levels: on the one hand, the concreteness of waste, with its material history and environmental impact; on the other, the possibility of lightening it, transforming it, and leading it towards a new symbolic existence.
In *Etere*, what was destined to remain as waste becomes a rarefied presence. The material continues to exist, but changes state: no longer waste, no longer a negative trace of consumption, but rather a contemplative surface, suspended energy, a perceptual space. The act of recycling does not erase the material’s origin, but transfigures it, restoring a new form and a different responsibility.

Materials used:

paint, tobacco, paper, cellulose, resin
