Somewhere outside Prague, on a flat training ground under heavy clouds, a young officer stands on a bay horse. Blue dolman, red trousers, a plume of hair — a uniform that was supposed to inspire respect even at a hundred paces. The painting is small, but the figure in it is complete. The horse stands calmly, the soldier looks straight ahead. Silence before the order — or after it. We don’t know. And that’s what makes this painting so powerful.
