I began this painting without knowing where I was going.
My hand moved before my mind did. The spirals appeared one by one, then everywhere at once, on every scale, in every direction. Worlds spinning without touching. A universe spinning out of control.
And at the center, that silhouette. Always her. But this time she is no longer facing infinity; she is inside it. Encircled. Besieged on all sides by forces she neither understands nor controls.
Yet she stands.
And at the bottom, almost by accident, the roses appeared. Red. Life. A stubborn tenderness at the foot of chaos. I don’t know why they’re there. But they had to be there.
Maybe that’s what this painting is about: the violence of everything swirling around, and life pushing forward anyway. Not in spite of the chaos. In the chaos.
We don’t always choose the storms that sweep through us. We just choose to stay standing in the middle
