Original artwork description
From the "Impositions" Collection.
Humans have a need to control their environments. At this point in history, we've taken control of our planet and effectively removed ourselves from the natural habitats that surround us. We push and pull - physically altering the face of the planet in order to build cities, mines, aquaducts, dams, reservoirs... you name it. In the world of architecture and engineering, nature is a problem to be fixed, to be manipulated to our benefit, and can often pose an imposition to the building of new systems, structures, and technologies. This collection of artwork, like many of Laird's previous collections, focus on the visual relationship between manmade structures and natural landscapes. But this time, posing the question - is nature the obtrusion, or is it our entire human race that is imposing on our planet?
