Original artwork description
Currents Through Structure is an original large-scale blue and brown abstract diptych by contemporary artist Tatiana Malinovscaia, created in 2026.
The artwork consists of two 100 × 140 cm acrylic paintings on canvas, conceived as a single monumental composition exploring the relationship between movement, structure, water and architectural space.
I created this diptych around the idea that movement rarely follows the boundaries we create for it.
We build structures, divide spaces and establish lines, yet light, water and time continuously pass through them, changing their appearance. I wanted these two canvases to capture that tension between what feels constructed and what refuses to remain still.
The left panel is cooler and more fluid. Layers of dusty blue, muted turquoise, steel blue, blue-grey and deep teal overlap with soft white, ivory, pale grey and cool greige. Rectangular forms and intersecting lines suggest fragments of windows, façades, reflections or architectural plans.
The right panel introduces a warmer and more grounded counterpoint. Warm beige, taupe, sand, earthy brown, burnt umber and espresso meet passages of pale aqua, icy blue, white and blue-grey. Dark charcoal and brown vertical forms create a strong architectural axis through the composition.
The contrast between the two canvases is intentional.
One feels cooler and more atmospheric; the other is warmer and more structural. Yet they are connected by recurring blues, whites, dark linear elements and the central energy of the painted surface.
I worked with professional acrylic paints using palette knives and brushes, building both paintings through repeated layering, glazing, scraping, dragging, dry-brush techniques and expressive gestural mark-making.
Some areas were painted over and partially removed several times. Earlier colors remain visible beneath translucent layers and scraped passages, creating depth and allowing the history of the painting process to remain present.
In some areas, the paint creates defined geometric planes. In others, it breaks apart into irregular textures, drips, scraped marks and spontaneous gestures.
This contrast between geometry and gesture is essential to the work.
From a distance, Currents Through Structure appears architectural and composed. Up close, the surfaces reveal movement: colors overlap, boundaries disappear and individual marks interrupt the underlying order.
For me, the diptych exists somewhere between architectural abstraction, geometric painting and an abstract landscape shaped by water and reflection.
I did not want to describe a specific city, coastline or building. Instead, I wanted to create an imagined environment where the viewer might recognize fragments of different experiences—a reflection on glass, water beside architecture, changing daylight across a façade, or a landscape seen through layers of constructed space.
The two paintings are deliberately different rather than symmetrical. Their relationship is created through contrast.
The cooler blue panel brings a sense of depth and movement, while the warmer brown and neutral panel introduces weight and stability. The physical space between them becomes part of the composition—a pause between two visual states.
For me, Currents Through Structure is ultimately about the tension between permanence and change. Structures appear solid, but everything around them—and eventually within them—is transformed by movement, light and time.
Each canvas measures 100 × 140 cm. Displayed vertically side by side as intended, the complete diptych measures approximately 200 × 140 cm, excluding the space between the panels.
Its monumental scale gives the work a strong physical presence, while the combination of blue, turquoise, white, beige, taupe, brown and charcoal creates a sophisticated balance between cool and warm tones.
This is a one-of-a-kind original contemporary abstract diptych, painted entirely by hand in 2026. Both paintings are signed on the front and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
The canvases are sold unstretched and unframed and will be carefully shipped rolled in a protective tube for safe international delivery. They can be professionally stretched onto wooden stretcher bars after arrival.
