MATERIALS & SUSTAINABILITY:
I create sustainable art and all materials are chosen as consciously as they are used.
The work is created with professional archival and lightfast acrylic, watercolour and ink on mineral stone paper — a surface composed primarily of calcium carbonate derived from limestone, with a smooth, velvety texture that combines the tactile quality of stone with the flexibility and lightness of paper. Unlike most traditional substrates, it does not buckle or warp when exposed to moisture. The layered pigments and particular qualities of the surface give the work a visual presence that shifts with ambient and directional light as well as viewing angle. The painting is alive and responsive to the conditions of its display environment.
Environmental consciousness lies at the heart of my material selection. Mineral stone sheet production requires significantly fewer natural resources and toxic additives than canvas or traditional paper - no deforestation, no heavy water use, no chemical bleaching. The paints used are water-based with low or zero VOC, and without the harmful solvents associated with oil-based mediums.
SERIES: Natura In Flux
'Cool It' forms part of the Natura In Flux series, which examines nature as an interconnected process rather than a collection of fixed forms. Organic structures shift between recognisable and imagined states, reflecting the perpetual processes through which living systems grow, adapt, transform and regenerate. Nothing exists in complete isolation or permanence, as every form is subject to the conditions around it and to forces that extend beyond its individual boundaries and control.
The series extends this understanding of transformation to the relationship between human experience and the wider natural world. The distinction between internal and external, individual and environment, becomes increasingly fluid. The works interpret life as an ongoing exchange where interaction and change are not interruptions of existence but some of its fundamental conditions.
ABOUT 'Cool It':
'Cool It' is an appeal for climate change management on behalf of humanity and
wildlife - a call for balance, restraint and renewal. Layered blues, silvers and soft
earth tones evoke melting ice, shifting skies and fragile ecosystems under strain as well as recovery.
The composition suggests both disturbance and renewal, reflecting the shared fate
of all living systems. The cooling calm of restoration invites viewers to imagine a world healed through collective action.
The painting urges awareness and empathy, celebrating nature’s unwavering beauty
while reminding us of our shared responsibility to protect it.
