Original artwork description:

Acrylic painting on canvas.
This painting depicts sunlight suddenly breaking through the clouds over Portree harbour on the Isle of Skye Scotland.
This painting was finished in my studio from some quick sketches and some photographs I took at the time.
I started the painting by covering parts of the canvas with texture paste to give the base a 3D element before applying the paint.
Once the traditional style painting is complete I then create a bluey glaze which I quickly apply with a large brush to certain areas to create the effect of movement. Then before the glaze dries I remove parts of it to reveal sunshine breaking through the clouds underneath.
This is a technique which I have been developing recently to create drama and movement in my seascapes. I like the effects which it can give sometimes although the final process of removing parts of the glaze can be nerve shredding as hours of work can and have been ruined.
Finally once totally dry I finish the painting with a couple of coats of gloss varnish to protect it.

Materials used:

Acrylic paint with some texture medium
