- Breaking Formation
Original artwork description
Four clustered forms in deep navy, burnt orange and charcoal sit in loose, circular tension against a soft, weathered white and pale blue ground, as though a formation of clouds once whole have just began to scatter.
The Story
Breaking Formation is part of The Sublime Horizon, a collection inspired by the fleeting beauty of a distant thunderstorm I watched roll across the horizon from my garden. From a place of safety, the storm transformed the sky into a luminous expanse of orange, immense natural power becoming unexpectedly serene. In this piece, I wanted to capture that moment just as the clouds began to shift and separate, breaking from their formation as the storm breaks through. Painted with bold colour, expressive brushwork and richly textured impasto, it explores the paradox at the heart of the sublime: the coexistence of awe and tranquillity, chaos and beauty.
