Original Oil painting by Ukrainian artist Alisa Onipchenko-Cherniakovska

Between Storms captures a fleeting moment when the sea and sky seem caught between opposing forces.

Heavy masses of violet, blue-gray and muted earth tones move across the sky, opening unexpectedly into passages of warm ochre, peach and gold. Below, the sea carries fragments of this changing light in layers of turquoise, deep blue and green. A scattering of seabirds crosses the composition, introducing small points of movement against the immense scale of the atmosphere.

The painting is built through expressive, physical layers of oil paint. Palette-knife marks and areas of impasto allow the clouds to move between representation and abstraction: from a distance they form a dramatic coastal sky, while at close range they dissolve into independent passages of color and texture.

I was interested in the tension of an unsettled landscape — the brief interval when darkness has not completely taken over and warm light still breaks through it. The horizon remains deliberately restrained, allowing the sky to dominate while the restless surface of the water carries the energy downward through the composition.

The result is not an image of a particular place so much as an experience of weather, distance and changing light — a coastal landscape suspended between turbulence and release.
One of a kind artwork. Ready to hang.
