Bench under a tree (2024) Original Oil Painting by Natalia Matveeva

50 x 50 x 1.4cm (unframed) / 50 x 50cm (actual image size)

I painted this landscape from life in Bavaria, Germany. For me, this painting is about silence, tranquillity, and the simple pleasure of stopping during a walk and sitting on a bench by the stream under a tree, surrounded by beautiful nature.

It is a very poetic landscape that draws the eye. Through numerous layers of colourful glazes, the painting seems to glow from within, like a crystal reflecting and shimmering with different shades of green. The red bench becomes a vivid contrasting accent within the green landscape, giving the work a particular sense of expressiveness.

I chose a circular format with a diameter of 50 cm, which enhances the feeling of a complete, intimate space. The landscape was painted over a green imprimatura, which remains visible through the layers of paint.

The work is painted on a thin canvas that I stretched and primed myself. The edges of the stretcher are painted green, allowing the painting to be presented as an independent object without necessarily requiring a frame.
