Original artwork description
Before Belonging explores the emotional space that exists before we feel fully connected to a place, a person, or even to ourselves.
Floating forms in sky blue, soft turquoise, pale stone, misty grey and warm white appear suspended within an open field. They are close enough to suggest a relationship, yet remain separated by space. Their fragmented arrangement evokes the feeling of searching for connection before a sense of belonging has fully emerged.
Within my artistic practice, the horizon is not a physical line but an inner state — a point of transition between distance and connection, uncertainty and awareness. In this work, the horizon becomes a psychological space where identity and belonging are still being formed.
The restrained palette creates a quiet, airy atmosphere, while irregular edges and subtle marks introduce a feeling of movement and uncertainty. The painting invites the viewer to reflect on their own relationship with home, identity and the places where they feel they belong.
