Beach
I like to think that most of us spend our lives on the surface of things.
We sit in cafés, make plans, argue, fall in love, rush from one place to another. Everything feels stable and familiar, as if there is solid ground beneath our feet and we know exactly where the road leads.
But every now and then, it helps to remember where we actually are. In the middle of space. On a small island of light moving through the darkness. And suddenly the ordinary world starts to feel a little surreal.
This piece began with the thought of how easily we get used to the extraordinary. We are often more surprised by the inconveniences of a Monday than by the fact that we exist at all. That we can look at the stars, speak to one another, and somehow call all of this “normal.”
Maybe that’s why the space beneath this terrace is not water but a galaxy. Sometimes it is worth remembering what we are really standing above.
