Original artwork description
The Awakening
Inspired by the symbolic surrealism of Salvador Dalí, The Awakening captures the moment consciousness breaks through illusion - when desire, pain, and awareness collide.
At the centre of the composition, a skull bites into a ripe pomegranate. The fruit is intoxicating. A solitary bee hovers nearby. The scene exists in a suspended state between life and decay, pleasure and consequence.
The pomegranate has long symbolised life, fertility, temptation, and sacrifice. Here, it embodies passion - rich, consuming, and seductive, yet ultimately finite. The act of biting marks a point of no return: the instant desire is fully tasted and its cost revealed.
The skull is not a symbol of death, but of awareness. It represents what remains when illusions fall away - the self that awakens not through comfort, but when bearing suffering becomes too much, when passion alone is no longer sustainable as a way of living.
The bee, delicate yet tireless, symbolises consciousness and persistence. It is the quiet messenger of awakening, circling patiently until the moment we are ready to see.
Together, these elements tell a deeply human story: awakening does not arrive at the height of pleasure, but at its limits. Transformation begins when intensity can no longer carry us forward.
Painted in oil on canvas, The Awakening is presented in a heavy wooden frame with gold leaf plating, enhancing its timeless, almost sacred presence.
