Aurora is a mesmerizing artwork that draws the viewer in with its unique and organic process of creation. The artist took a bold and unconventional approach by using a paste of copper, vinegar, and salt on raw canvas to create a dynamic and textured patina ground. This initial step set the stage for the entire painting, with its stains, drips, and pooling colors serving as the foundation upon which the rest of the piece would evolve. The artist then embarked on a journey of discovery, allowing the shapes and patterns of the patina to guide the creation of a figure, with no preconceived plan or sketch in mind. This spontaneous and intuitive approach lends a sense of fluidity and energy to the portrait, as if it is emerging and unfolding before our very eyes. As the head and shoulders of the figure were built up in oils, the artist remained true to the underlying tones and textures of the patina, ensuring that the warmth and coolness of the ground remained palpable throughout the painting. The drips and shapes that formed the backdrop were reinterpreted and refined, transforming into a mystical cityscape of stone towers and mountains that seem to materialize out of the textured surface. The result is a captivating and ethereal artwork that captures the essence of Aurora.
