Medaillon (2025) Original Sculpture by Charlie Kamping

With Medaillon I wanted to explore the relationship between two circles: an outer copper construction and the smaller glass composition suspended within it.

Rather than simply using the copper as a frame, I wanted both circles to become spatially connected. The metal construction supports the glass but remains visually independent, creating an open space around the central medallion and allowing light to approach it from every direction.

The glass combines two techniques. Transparent coloured glass has been fused into the composition, while subtle diffuse colour transitions were created between the layers with glass-painting pigments. The combination produces an unpredictable play of colour, transparency and reflected light.

This means that Medaillon never looks entirely the same. In direct sunlight the colours become vivid and luminous; in softer light the work becomes quieter and more translucent. The copper will also develop its own character over time, creating a dialogue between a material that ages and glass that continues to capture the light.

About
My work begins with materials and construction. I have always been fascinated by the idea that the way an object is made does not need to be hidden. A joint,... Read more
