Valley Light is an original pastel landscape exploring the quiet atmosphere of a mountain valley after the passing of clouds.

A luminous body of water winds through the landscape, reflecting the pale light beneath a dramatic sky. The surrounding mountains are built from layered passages of blue, green, ochre and muted earth tones, creating a sense of depth while retaining a painterly, expressive quality.

The foreground becomes increasingly tactile, with broken pastel marks suggesting grasses, rocks and vegetation. In contrast, the distant mountains and sky dissolve into softer passages of colour, creating an atmospheric transition between solid form and open space.

I was interested in capturing not a specific geographical location, but the feeling of being surrounded by mountains — the silence, changing light and sense of vastness that can make a landscape feel almost timeless.

Created with pastel on specialized abrasive paper, the textured surface allows multiple layers and expressive marks to remain visible.
