Abstract Lands (2026) Original Oil Painting by Michelle Gibbs

This painting is from my new series, The Language of Light. Most of us look up to find the light in a landscape. With this one I wanted to follow it down instead, to that low band of gold and orange where the sun sits just behind the horizon and pours across the land towards you.

The sky is full of big summer clouds catching warm yellows and soft pinks, with blues and violets moving through the shadows. Below the horizon the strokes open out and stretch forward, so the light feels like it is reaching right to your feet.

Painted in oils with bold, broken marks of colour, this piece is about that moment at the end of the day when everything starts to glow. I wanted it to feel open and full of air, like standing in a wide landscape with nowhere else you need to be.
