A Life (Ein Leben) (2015) Original Acrylic Painting by Ralf Schmidt

“A Life” is, for me, a painting about becoming an individual. The tree stands as a symbol of an entire life – growing from a fundamental pattern shaped by nature. I imagine this process a little like a computer program: a code determines many things, but it is not completely rigid. Small variations are possible, and these differences allow something unique to emerge from the same basic principle. We, too, are shaped by what we are given, yet we develop into individuals unlike anyone else. The tree stands quietly and firmly within a world of different colours, shapes and fragments – a symbol of a life that continues to evolve through what is given to us and through our own experiences.
