About Nicol Vacaru

Biography

I am a contemporary artist working primarily with ink on paper, using the human figure and profile to explore identity, connection, memory, and the emotions that often remain unspoken.

My drawings begin with movement. I work with fluid, spontaneous brushstrokes and allow the ink to guide the composition before gradually bringing the human presence into focus. Profiles may overlap, contain one another, turn away or remain connected through a single continuous line.

I am fascinated by how little is needed to suggest a person — a curve, a dark passage, an interruption, or an untouched area of paper. Negative space is therefore as important to me as the ink itself. I prefer not to explain everything within an image, leaving room for the viewer to recognise something of their own experience.

My background in architecture has shaped the way I think about proportion, rhythm, structure and balance, while ink gives me the freedom and unpredictability that I need in my work.

Alongside my drawings, I also create thread-based artworks in which line becomes physical, built through tension, repetition and precision.

At the centre of my practice is human connection — the quiet relationship between what we show, what we carry within us, and what can exist between two people without being spoken.

Each original artwork is created by hand and is one of a kind.
