Biography
Joanne Spencer is an award-winning, self-taught printmaker based in Wiltshire, England, specialising in original, limited-edition reduction linocuts.
Joanne discovered linocut printmaking in her early fifties and quickly fell in love with the process of transforming a simple piece of lino into a multi-layered artwork. Inspired by nature, coastlines, trees, changing light and the places that stay with us, her work often explores the connection between landscape, memory and emotion.
Working with a single block of lino, Joanne gradually carves away the surface, printing each colour in succession. It is a slow, deliberate and sometimes unpredictable process, with no going back once a layer has been cut away. Each print is individually hand-pulled, signed and numbered, usually in editions of ten or fewer.
Her work has been selected for exhibitions across the UK, including the Ironbridge Fine Arts Open, where she received recognition from printmaking specialists Essdee. She is also co-owner of The Corsham Gallery in Wiltshire.
Joanne believes that art should move the soul, not simply match the décor. Her aim is to create artwork that brings a sense of calm, connection and quiet joy into people's homes — pieces that evoke a memory, capture a feeling or remind us of somewhere special.
For Joanne, the greatest pleasure remains that final moment when the paper is peeled back from the block and the finished print is revealed.
