About Jane Nee

Biography

My artistic practice explores the relationship between the visible and the hidden, and the ways we perceive and interpret the world around us. I am particularly interested in the coexistence of seemingly opposing elements — strength and fragility, movement and stillness, permanence and transformation. Rather than seeing them as contradictions, I explore how they complement one another and reveal deeper connections.

Nature, human emotions, and the quiet moments of everyday life are central sources of inspiration in my work. The changing quality of light, the atmosphere of a city, a solitary figure, or the subtle relationships within a landscape can become the starting point for a painting. I am drawn to familiar subjects that reveal unexpected meaning through closer observation.

Working primarily in oil, I develop my paintings through a multilayered technique, gradually building depth and atmosphere through successive layers of paint. My process combines delicate glazing with more substantial passages of paint, with particular attention to tonal relationships, the transition between warm and cool colors, and the interplay of light and shadow. I approach each composition by moving from broader forms and masses towards carefully considered details, allowing the image to develop gradually while preserving its emotional character.

Whether painting landscapes, psychological portraits, or urban scenes, I seek to create a sense of stillness and contemplation. I want my paintings to invite viewers to pause, look beyond the immediate subject, and discover their own emotional connection with the image.

For me, painting is a way of observing the world more attentively and expressing the subtle connections between people, nature, and the spaces we inhabit.
