About Clara Wilkinson

Biography

I’m a painter who grew up in South London before relocating to Brighton in 2017.
My work is inspired by nature in particular the landscapes of Andalucia, Exmoor and the South Downs where I live, but my paintings are also about memory, feelings and the passing of time.
I like painting outdoors making studies in watercolour or with a single pen on paper, before returning to the studio where I work on a larger scale using oil paint on stretched canvas, linen or large sheets of paper.
Many artists influence my practice. Early on I studied Lucian Freud and Frank Auerbach from the Camden group of painters.  A few current obsessions are David Hockney's pencil drawings, the impressionist paintings of Pierre Bonnard and the abstracts of the American artist Richard Diebenkorn.

I take commissions for paintings, sell limited edition giclee prints and I exhibit regularly in Brighton as part of Artists Open House and in London with the Portobello Gallery and the Affordable Art Fair. I am a member of CanArt and in 2023 I was shortlisted for the women in Art prize and my paintings are now in collections throughout the UK, Europe and the USA. In January 2024 I featured as 'Artist in residence' in the Sussex Life publication.
