What Still Connects Us (2026) Original Mixed-media Painting by Tatsiana Yelistratava

What is it that still holds us together when parts of us have already changed, broken apart, or drifted away? This work invites the viewer to explore that question alongside the artist. We often think resilience means returning to who we once were, but perhaps resilience is something entirely different. Perhaps it is the quiet realization that even after transformation, invisible connections remain. They do not erase the fractures—they give them meaning.

Created as part of my ongoing series The Shape of Resilience, this artwork is built through a three-layer process, where each stage carries its own symbolic role. The first layer is a vibrant acrylic portrait celebrating identity, emotion, and the complexity of human experience. The second layer introduces physical fragmentation: the painted image is torn apart and carefully reconstructed, allowing the fractures and black negative space to remain visible as a reminder that every life experience reshapes us rather than returns us to who we once were. The third layer completes the work through delicate cotton threads that bridge selected fragments. They do not repair the portrait or conceal the distance between its parts. Instead, they represent the invisible bonds of memory, emotion, hope, and human connection that continue to exist even when life leaves spaces that can never be filled.

Blending contemporary figurative painting with mixed-media techniques, this original artwork combines expressive color, bold contrasts, physical texture, and conceptual storytelling. It speaks to collectors who appreciate contemporary art that explores themes of identity, resilience, transformation, and emotional connection. The vivid palette against the deep black background creates a striking focal point for modern, minimalist, Scandinavian, industrial, and gallery-inspired interiors while inviting viewers to return to the work and discover new layers of meaning over time.
