Gold, and no horizon. A figure emerges from it the way a saint emerges from an icon — lifted out of place and time, with nothing behind him but light. But this is not heaven. It is albero, the ochre sand of the arena, which by late afternoon turns the colour of beaten gold.

The montera is pulled low. The eyes are closed. The face has been almost entirely wiped from the canvas, and what remains of it is governed by a single emotion.

The vuelta al ruedo is the lap of honour a matador is given around the ring when the crowd decides he has earned it. He walks it alone, in the suit he killed in, while the stands wave white handkerchiefs and sprigs of wild rosemary fall onto the sand at his feet.

And he is smirking. Barely — a lift at one corner of the mouth, exactly as much pleasure as a man will permit himself in public. It is the smallest gesture in the painting, and it carries everything.

The blood has already arrived: on the collar, at the buttons, thrown loose into the gold behind him. Jubilation, death and blood in one second, in one place. Spain has never separated them, and neither does this canvas.

The cobalt and silver of the suit are built up in ridges of texture paste, so the embroidery rises physically from the surface and catches raking light. Seen closely it is a relief; from across a room, it is a man.

Hung alone on a deep, dark wall — green, plaster or oxblood — the gold stops being a colour and becomes a source of light. A work for a hallway, a study, or a dining room after dark.

Not a portrait. A presence.
