No. 4 Eyes Closed (2026) Original Mixed-media Painting by Mieke van Os

30 x 30 x 3cm (unframed)

£563.65

The profile is derived from a work by Jean-Honoré Fragonard: *La Liseuse* (The Girl Reading). Whilst that work has a romantic feel, this piece exudes a certain sense of urgency. The gaze is focused, concentrated. When you zoom in on Fragonard’s work, the organic lines come to the fore. You can, as it were, see the layers in the skin, the ‘grooves’ of the wrinkles, the transitions between the areas of skin. This reminds me of works created in fresco. Colours applied directly onto wet plaster. That is why this work is built up from unusual layers. A layer of gauze is attached to the canvas as a second support to hold the mixture of self-hardening clay and vermiculite in place. In keeping with the somewhat tense gaze, the use of colour also conveys a sense of tension. The colours are built up in layers of alcohol ink and acrylic ink. This requires quick and precise application, as alcohol ink is volatile and adheres immediately to clay. The colours are alternately brushed and poured.

Dimensions: 70 (h) x 70 (w) x 4 (d) cm or 30 (h) x 120 (w) x 4 (d) cm.
The Eyes Closed series consists of six portraits, four of which measure 30 x 30 cm, one 40 x 40 cm and one 70 x 50 cm. Each portrait features closed or downcast eyes and a profile view. Each portrait conveys a different emotional state. Each portrait is created using a different material, a different style and a different technique.

Tip: the series of portraits Eyes Closed nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 all have the same dimensions and background, allowing them to be mounted as a four-panel work onto an anthracite-coloured backing board, to be framed subsequently in a box frame measuring 70 (h) x 70 (w) x 4 (d) cm or 30 (h) x 120 (w) x 4 (d) cm.

Materials used:

clay, gauze, plaster, marker, aluminium mesh, alcohol ink, acrylic ink, Old Masters antracite gesso
