Museum is a hand-printed linocut exploring the relationship between cultural institutions and the people who sustain them.
The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA) is depicted balancing on a single stone. The stone acts as a metaphor for people — artists, visitors, collectors, museum workers and everyone whose presence and participation allow cultural institutions to exist.
Although the museum appears monumental and permanent, its position is deliberately fragile. Remove the stone, and the entire structure loses its balance. The image reflects on a simple idea: institutions may preserve art, history and cultural memory, but without people they lose both their foundation and their meaning.
The work was originally created for an art competition and was later displayed and offered for sale in the museum shop of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA).
Each impression is printed by hand, making slight variations in ink and pressure part of the character of the work.
