I’ve always been drawn to art of Baroque times, not only for its dramatic light and dark palette, but for its quiet honesty.

All that beauty and theatre on the surface, and then the small, almost discreet details that reveal what would rather stay hidden. Think of Caravaggio’s paintings of Bacchus - so luminous and immaculate portraits to the casual eye, yet edged with subtle signs of decadence and decay.

Also those perfect still life scenes on black background of other Baroque painters - abundance of taste, aroma and beauty at its best. But look twice and somewhere in the corner or behind the best looking fruits you notice a fly or two sitting on something that has already begun to rot.

No fruits in this piece, though. Structure intact, ornamentation in place, and just a couple, sitting close enough to qualify, but the rest is politely concealed.
