Another of those amazing and amusing sights in Bangkok. I’ve long been attracted to the sight of this, the dynamics. Trading in religious amulets seems a big business. And there’s a crazy display of amulet vendors lined up on the sidewalk along the main road leading to the weekend market. There’s a certain look about them, sitting on their low stool at their low tables with their selection of little stone, cement, or brass Buddhist icons. Here I mix that look, those postures, with a generous spray of colours.
The close up picture is of higher resolution to give a better sense of the paint, paper and the brush stroke.
I also show an ink painting I did on this subject back in 1999, and a photo of the location.
Another picture has me holding up the painting to put it into perspective. Another is a close up on the text, and the work in progress.
