Final Cut, 2024
In this painting I explore the subtle tension between identity, ritual, and the roles we perform in contemporary life. A seated figure, dressed in a vivid purple suit, carefully cuts a red tie placed on a white plate using a fork and knife. The gesture resembles the quiet ritual of a meal, yet what lies on the plate is not food but a symbol.
The red tie, often associated with power, professionalism, and social expectation, becomes the object of consumption. By cutting and preparing it as if it were a meal, I wanted to suggest the strange ways in which individuals may internalize or “consume” the identities imposed by work, status, or social structures. At the same time, the act may also represent a moment of transformation, a deliberate gesture of reclaiming oneself by symbolically dismantling what defines us.
The partially hidden face of the figure shifts the focus away from individuality and toward the action itself, making the gesture feel both personal and universal. The scene unfolds almost like a quiet ceremony, where something familiar is transformed into something unsettling and reflective.
Color plays an important role in the atmosphere of the painting. The richness of the purple suit suggests individuality and quiet defiance, while the red tie, intense and luminous, becomes the visual and symbolic center of the composition. The soft pink background and muted gray-blue table create a calm and contemplative setting, allowing the symbolic act to take center stage.
Through this image I wanted to create a moment that feels both ironic and introspective, a simple yet powerful metaphor about identity, expectation, and the quiet decision to redefine oneself.
