European Roller (2026) Original Watercolour by Tetiana Savchenko

The European roller is full of surprises. Its warm brown plumage contrasts with brilliant cobalt and turquoise feathers, while hints of lilac around its face add even more color. I love this unexpected combination — a bird that looks quite understated at first glance but reveals an extraordinary palette when you look closer.

In this watercolor portrait, I wanted to capture the roller’s distinctive colors and elegant shape without distracting from the bird itself. The clean white background gives its vivid blue wings and long tail room to stand out, while the branch adds a simple, natural touch.

I build the colors with transparent watercolor layers, allowing subtle shifts in pigment and the texture of the paper to bring the feathers to life. Up close, you can appreciate the delicate brushwork and the way warm and cool colors meet across the plumage.

This original bird painting would make a lovely accent in a contemporary, Scandinavian or classic interior, especially for someone who loves wildlife and the surprising beauty of birds.
