About Steve White
Biography
I started painting, aged 50, after visiting a Wassily Kandinsky exhibition at the Royal Academy in London. I vowed not to fall victim to the infamous New Maths Equation: MODERN ART = I COULD DO THAT + YEAH BUT YOU DIDN'T. I did. Quite by accident I started painting reflections in Amsterdam's canals when I moved to The Netherlands - the patterns they created were abstract, whilst, at the same time, absolutely real. In another life I was a travel writer so, to prevent myself getting bored, I mix my reflection paintings with some one-off Art Deco-ish travel posters, and also word paintings. Without wishing to downplay what I do, I just like making pretty patterns. I consider painting a swanky way of colouring-in. My main aim is to brighten up that bare expanse of wall above your sofa. I don't think art, or its motives, should be too complicated.
