"Youth " Framed
20x16"
I wanted to capture the physical and emotional stillness of a single afternoon—that specific, sun-drenched solitude that defines the transition from childhood into something more complex.

The Vision
The inspiration for this piece came from the sharp contrast between the heat of the air and the refreshing depth of the water. I chose a high-angle, diagonal composition to emphasize the boundary between the solid, sun-baked concrete and the fluid, shifting surface of the pool. This boundary serves as a metaphor for the threshold of adulthood: the girl sits firmly on the edge, yet she is already connected to the vast, cool unknown of the water.

Color and Light
I utilized a palette of high-saturation blues and warm earth tones to recreate the sensory experience of a summer day:

The Water: I treated the pool not as a flat surface, but as a living entity. Using expressive, rhythmic brushstrokes in cobalt and turquoise, I wanted to convey the weight and movement of the water as it laps against the subject’s legs.

The Light: The light in this piece is intentional. By casting a long, heavy shadow behind her, I hoped to ground her in the moment while the bright highlights on her hair and shoulders suggest an inner radiance or a focus on a future just out of frame.

The Narrative
The items scattered around her—the striped towel and the small book—are the artifacts of a day spent in thought. My goal was not just to paint a person at a pool, but to paint the interiority of adolescence. She isn't performing for a viewer; she is simply being. In "Youth," I invite you to remember that fleeting feeling of standing on the edge of your own life, watching the ripples and waiting for the right moment to dive in.
