Your Turn (2026) Original Acrylic Painting by Bogdan Zagan

"Your Turn" captures a moment of poised contemplation. This vertical acrylic painting presents a solitary ballet dancer, her back turned to the viewer, seated upon a tall, worn wooden stool. Draped in a structured white tutu with distinct grey folds and textures, she remains in full performance attire, including her pointed ballet slippers with laces. The dancer’s posture is one of delicate strength, and her faceless form adds a layer of anonymity and introspection. She looks slightly over her shoulder, towards a chess set resting on a dark table at her side.

This artwork was created through layered acrylics on a textured canvas, focusing on the contrast between the fluid grace of the dancer and the sharp angles of the stool and background. The painting features a deliberate brushwork that balances realism with expressionistic texture. To ensure the composition remains focused on the main figure, I purposefully painted the chess pieces on the board in a slightly more impressionistic, even negligently-rendered style. This technique was used to keep the eye drawn to the dancer's pose and form, using the chess pieces as a subtle thematic element rather than a competing focal point.

The inspiration for "Your Turn" comes from the juxtaposition of two disciplined worlds: ballet and chess. Both require strategy, practice, and a graceful flow of movement (even mental movement). The title itself is a double entendre, referring to both the moment in a chess game and the dancer’s cue to perform. It’s an exploration of readiness, patience, and the powerful, quiet moments between actions. The faceless figure is meant to represent any individual poised on the brink of their next significant move.

This painting is special for its unique narrative and textured composition. It stands out by merging the seemingly disparate worlds of performing arts and intellectual games into one harmonious piece. The high contrast of the white tutu against the distressed, golden-grey background, and the specific decision to keep the peripheral details like the chess pieces simplified, creates a powerful sense of atmosphere. The vertical orientation makes it a striking addition to a focused interior space, and the signature 'ZAGAN' is visible at the bottom. "Your Turn" is a perfect fit for a space that values introspection, performance, and strategic thinking.
