Original artwork description
Us, people. Vatican, 160 × 160 cm
Acrylic on linen canvas
"Us, people. Vatican" belongs to my conceptual series Us, people., exploring individuals, communities and the structures created around them.
Here, scale becomes part of the narrative. Although the linen canvas measures 160 × 160 cm, the painted area occupies only a small fraction of its surface — a visual reference to the physical scale of Vatican City and, at the same time, a contrast between geographical size and cultural influence.
At first glance, the composition appears disciplined: a grid of small individual squares surrounded by an almost monumental field of raw linen. Look closer, however, and the order begins to fracture.
White, black, purple and gold dominate the palette — colours deeply embedded in Christian and ecclesiastical visual traditions. Crosses repeatedly emerge from the individual fields, often rendered in gold. Elsewhere, gold is organised into small geometric units, accumulating within the grid. What may initially appear decorative gradually begins to suggest value, possession and material weight.
The surfaces themselves resist perfection. Paint cracks, layers separate, stains emerge from underneath and fragments of other colours break through the controlled palette. Tiny letters and partially concealed signs appear within some of the squares, visible only to those willing to look closely.
This tension between surface and what lies beneath is central to the work. Order confronts imperfection; spirituality meets materiality; symbols of faith coexist with traces that disturb their apparent purity.
From a distance, Vatican is quiet, minimal and meticulously structured.
Up close, the structure begins to crack.
