The Snowmaiden is an atmospheric fine art photograph of a winter storm moving across the sea, where dramatic clouds and soft golden light transform the landscape into something almost painterly. Created on the hilltops of the Isle of Skye looking over to the mountains of the Scottish Highlands, it captures one of those fleeting moments when weather and light seem to remake the world.

Dark charcoal clouds gather around a luminous centre, their edges touched with warm gold and soft cream. Beneath them, distant veils of rain fall towards the horizon while the sea catches the light, glowing quietly in shades of bronze, pewter and muted ochre. There is a beautiful contrast between the drama of the sky and the stillness of the water below.

For me, The Snowmaiden is about that strange beauty found at the edge of a storm. There is strength in it, but also softness — the sense of light emerging through darkness and illuminating the sea for just a few moments before the weather moves on.

With its sophisticated palette of gold, charcoal, cream and warm neutral tones, this atmospheric landscape works particularly well as large statement wall art. My work is all about the emotional connection we have to a place and the moment in our memory when we felt such intense pleasure looking at a landscape. I am driven to capture the essence of a place with my camera, working mainly with the colours and shapes I see when I half close my eyes. I travel to remote islands, to places steeped in history, unspoilt beaches and wild rocky coastlines where I love to work in quiet solitude.

I love printing and have long been obsessed with the materials I use. I love to work with fine art canvas and papers that are made for museum quality artworks.
