I began with two intersecting squares set against a flat acrylic ground, and developed the face around them, allowing the geometric forms to become an integral part of the portrait. The squares define the cheeks, while also extending into the forehead and chin, blurring the boundary between geometry and human form.
I applied the colour with a small palette knife rather than a brush, building up the surface to create a subtle sense of depth and three-dimensionality.
The figure inhabits a space between melancholy and contemplation. There is a sense of a life deeply lived behind his expression—a presence shaped by experience, memory, and the passage of time.
