Original artwork description
Hades rules over the underworld. He is stern, unyielding and just. One day, he falls in love with Persephone, the daughter of the supreme goddess Demeter. Hades abducts her to the underworld and makes her his queen. Demeter is inconsolable. As a result, the earth becomes barren and cold. Oh dear. Hades isn’t such a bad bloke after all, and he strikes a compromise. In spring and summer, Persephone returns to the earth, and in autumn and winter she joins her husband Hades and rules the underworld alongside him. According to the Greeks, this is how the seasons came into being.
