Original artwork description:

“The Dawn Treader” is an acrylic painting on plywood panel with a wooden frame 122cms wide and 92cms height, with a depth of 2 cms.
The painting takes its inspiration from the skies, horizon and landscape of the Sefton coastline in the U.K. I walk the coastline every morning in all weathers throughout the year. I see changes every day. The skies are constantly generating dramatic changes in light, shadow and colour. I see numerous shades of blue, orange, red and purple. The earth changes more slowly across the seasons bringing a vast array of colour and texture in this wild and non-manicured environment. This is not a literal painting. It is a response to a location and the memories it holds. The painting doesn’t attempt to replicate reality. “The Dawn Treader” is inspired by dawn’s early light at the break of day. The Sefton horizons are stunning especially at early morning or twilight time.
Most recently I’ve been working on plywood board because when using knives and sanding down areas I need a strong base with a bold key. I work quickly in practice and build the paintings in layers, then I ‘rest’ the works , review and continue to overlay colours, often scraping away previously applied layers.
I always reference the Fauvist artists Matisse, Vlaminck and Derain and the Impressionists, Monet, Pissarro and Vuillard together with modernists Gillian Ayres, David Hockney, Howard Hodgkin and Patrick Heron. The painting is shipped in a heavy duty cardboard crate.
