Southwest (2025) Original Acrylic Painting by Tim Smith

25 x 31 x 1cm (unframed) / 25 x 31cm (actual image size)

£300

An imagined Dartmoor landscape — where Romantic storytelling and memory meet in rough light and texture.
Southwest is part of a series called 'Wish You Were Here", exploring places I’ve long wanted to visit but never quite reached — landscapes imagined or remembered from books, stories, and half-formed memories. Painted on rough grade sandpaper, the surface gives the image a tactile warmth, with a 1.5 cm sandpaper border that frames the work from within.
This piece draws on the rocks and tors of Dartmoor, a landscape that has always fascinated me through the lens of Romantic literature and storytelling — wild, mysterious, and enduring. It reflects on the pull of certain places, the sense of familiarity without experience, and how imagination can fill the spaces left by time and missed chances.

Painted on rough grade sandpaper, glued to card with a 1.5 cm sandpaper border added, the painting can be framed under glass, or you may wish to have it mounted on wood panel to see the surface more. The paint on rough sandpaper looks lovely as it catches the light, which I have tried to show in the photos and video - so it's a real original not available in print.

Materials used:

Acrylic on sand paper, glued to card with a 1.5 cm sandpaper border added.

About
I paint small, strange, glowing worlds: night skies, a blossom tree in my garden, half-remembered landscapes. Each one feels like a window, or a fragment of a bigger scene that... Read more
