I was commissioned to do a conventional watercolour of the sailing ship Sea Cloud as a gift. I was so taken with the history of the ship that I decided to do a painting of it in my usual style.
Initially a Private Yacht, it went on to see active service for the US Navy during the second world war and was the first US naval vessel to have a racially integrated crew. You can read a full history at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_Cloud
The picture is painted on watercolour paper. She draws the lines with masking fluid to a planned arrangement before painting it with a watercolour wash which gets covered with clingfilm. Once this is removed the picture is further developed using acrylic inks which are left to dry before the masking is removed to reveal the final picture.
