Red Sky at Night (2025) Original Acrylic Painting by Abi Moffat

This original acrylic painting developed alongside a large-scale commission inspired by a couple’s memories of living by the sea in Poole. While working on the commission, I used this smaller wooden panel to wipe excess paint from my brushes, allowing its palette of sea blues and flashes of lifeboat orange to accumulate unintentionally. The surface, with its buildup of incidental marks, became the starting point for a painting in its own right. I responded intuitively to what was already there, building and disrupting the surface through rubbing away and reapplying layers through gestural mark-making. What began as a by-product of another work gradually found its own identity. The work suggests a seascape with the glow of sunlight breaking through above the water.
